Prayers and Praying

prayer433x275

One of the questions I am most frequently asked is about prayer and how exactly to get started?  It’s a good question people have been asking themselves for centuries, and I’m by no means an expert.

But I also think we just might be making it harder than it actually is.

Prayer is simply and profoundly conversation with God.  I’d like to think that at this stage in my life I listen in conversation with God as much as I talk; but that’s probably not true.  Somehow I don’t think God cares that I bug Him so much, in fact I think He digs it.

When I can’t quite find the words to say, sometimes I pray words others have already written.  I grew up saying The Our FatherHail Mary and Glory Be and probably pray those prayers a dozen or more times throughout the day.  I also pray them before I go to bed at night.

I’ve  included here some additional prayers that I have found helpful.  I’ve also included ideas for how to pray, based on some of my own experience, and ideas shared by others.  I hope you find these prayers and ideas useful when you need a helping hand in talking to God as well.

(To make it easy to refer to these articles about prayer in the future, these sections on Prayer; My Favorite Prayers; and Ideas on How to Pray are also new tabs on the main menu of the blog home page.)

Thanks, Chuck. The Merton prayer is one of my absolute favorites…

Thanks for this one Chuck. For Advent I decided that I wanted to improve my prayer life as I prepared for Christmas. Boy what a difference that has made. One of the things I have also started to do is keeping a “prayer list” on my cell phone It helps me keep track of all those people that I have said I would pray for. Now I don’t forget them.
Thanks for sharing your prayers with us.
