Happy Anniversary to Me

Today is my first anniversary as an Episcopalian. I’ve wrestled with how exactly to share this special anniversary occasion with you … not wanting to be disrespectful of my past, but not wanting to deny my present – and not entirely sure how to reach a happy middle ground, which is so Episcopalian!

Let me just share that my journey into the Episcopal Church began over twenty years ago when I watched from a distance as the Episcopal Church welcomed one minority group after another.  As I prepared myself for leaving one religion to join another, I realized somewhere along the journey that I wasn’t running away from something as much as I was running to something which I wholeheartedly believed in, namely the inclusion of the whole Body of Christ. I can’t tell you how much at peace I am in my decision.  The decision cost me dearly, but in what I lost (my position as a priest, relationships, my security in having a roof over my head and food on my table, my retirement and eventually my health insurance) I gained far more in the forming of my own conscience to follow God’s Call to a church which is a far better fit for me.  One of our wonderful bishops in The Diocese of Virginia likes to say, “We have been unable for forty years to find anyone to exclude from the Episcopal Church.”  It is this inclusion that I, along with countless other Episcopalians, celebrate this day and every day. Folks, if you’ve been unable to find a worshipping community where you will be welcomed with open arms, please consider joining the Episcopal Church – you will be most welcome here.

Peace friends,

Chuck

Chuck, I certainly concur. Seems to me that, as the Book of Common Prayer says in an entirely different context, you’re moving “from strength to strength.” Certainly you’re not running from your past but, I think, building on the strength of your past. So now you can continue running to your new place of service. That’s an inspiration for all of us who yearn to continue to grow. —- Shalom! . . . . . — Jonathan
